When Thirsty Merc burst into the Australian music charts in 2004, it was clear this band was one to watch. Their first album produced four singles that charted well while building a strong fanbase, but the sophmore album can prove difficult for any band.
The release of ‘Slideshows’ in April followed the band’s first top ten single ’20 Good Reasons’ and this album is definately one worth checking out.
Rai Thistlethwayte has a unique voice that makes any Thirsty Merc track instantly recognisable. The first track from the album introduces a slightly rockier sound for the band while retaining their ability to write a catchy melody.
The single ’20 Good Reasons’ is the next track and has been played all over radio since March. It’s the type of track you never get sick of hearing because the lyrics still resonate and make you think of that special someone. This track would definately be the highlight of the album while it also contains other amazing tracks.
‘The Whole World Reminds Me Of You’ is an example of what Thirsty Merc can do as a band who seem to effortlessly be able to write the perfect ballad. Everything about this track is absolutely brilliant.
Some critics have dismissed Thirsty Merc as being a typical rock band without a unique sound but this album clearly proves them wrong. It is clear that this band knows what they are doing with their sound and the direction they want to take it.
Every track on the album deserves to be listened to on repeat, especially ‘Those Eyes’ which displays both strong lyrics and melody. There is a different flavour to each song as well, such as ‘Crying In Denial’, which has a hint of Keane thanks to the addition of the piano.
It is clear that Rai has written the lyrics straight from his heart and fused different genres into the Thirsty Merc style. ‘She’s My Brother’ is the funkiest track on the album and does nothing but make you want to dance while cleaning your house.
Thirsty Merc‘s strengths are their lyrics and melodies, which shine through in every track. The lyrics are the kind that cut straight to the point while remaining true to the heart.
If you value these traits, you really shouldn’t hesitate in checking out Thirsty Merc. They are guaranteed quality.
