Tracklisting
1. Consolation Prize
2. These Questions Need No Answers
3. Waiting Game

This is the first release from Derby based five-piece These Waves currently available for free download via Bandcamp. From the off this EP launches into a frantic brand of angular post hardcore. The band deliver an individual sound which blends the increasingly popular post punk and post hardcore sounds with angular guitars making every track perfectly danceable.

As the EP progresses through the three tracks the musical style becomes more and more appealing. Opening track ‘consolation prize’ starts the EP off with a slightly lighter feel and makes a great introduction to the band. ‘These Questions Need No Answers’ has a bitter edge backed up with some passionate lyrics and beautifully flowing guitar lines. ‘Waiting Game’ is a perfect way to end the EP and blends the angular guitars and passionate vocals from the previous tracks into a stylish individual sound.

The dynamic displayed throughout these three tracks is truly fascinating, the blend between the American and post hardcore sound with the angular sound preferred by British alternative acts and with a post rock style is carried off perfectly. Vocally there are hints of post punk and I can see this act joining the growing scene of bands with a similar ethos including Stagecoach, Bromheads and Hold Your Horse Is all of which take influence from acts such as Gang Of Four and create amazingly different musical styles.

The angular side of the musical approach creates a refreshingly accessible sound, which is rare within post hardcore/punk inspired music. This trump card the band has to play is paired perfectly with hooky choruses which I’m sure will soon be filling live music venues. If theses three tracks are the first release from this band I really can’t wait to hear how impressive a full length will be.

When listening to the EP I do wonder how the recorded sound differs from their live sound and I’m eager to answer this question as soon as possible. This is most definitely a free download worth getting hold of!
