Tesla Boy - Klubi, Tampere - March 18th 2011

For the last three years European music magazines and blogs have been buzzing enthusiastically about one rare music species mutated from a fascination with electronics, style and art, mined from a diversity of New Wave influences like Bowie, Imagination and Depeche Mode and coming from a musically-severe natural environment aka Russian Show Business. The species is known as Tesla Boy and represented by Anton Sevidov (vocal, keyboards), Dima Midborn (bass), Poko Cox (guitar) and Michail Studnitsin (drums). The talent and charisma of these four music aesthetes are so unquestionable that Tesla Boy very often ranges with Russian vodka, famous for its high quality and taste. And so is Tesla Boy!

Surfing on the same revived New Wave together with the likes of Cut Copy, Hot Chip, MGMT, Empire of the Sun, Shiny Toy Guns, etc. Tesla Boy created their own, distinguishing sound: genuinely groovy, “soft spring”, synthesizer-based electropop animated with live guitars and drums. It has everything in it from virtuosity of jazz (Anton is a professional jazz pianist) to vitality of guitar rock and breezy sexuality of synthpop. When Tesla Boy play live, their music sounds like it is making love to you – covering you with soft and passionate kisses of the vocal; squeezing you tight in its stiff embraces of guitar riffs; going down your spine with playful fingertips of the synth; keeping up with the rhythmical moves of the drums, – until you reach the euphoria of music-visual satisfaction. That was how it felt like in Tampere at Hang the DJ party.

Tesla Boy were brought to Finland by Drink Tonight Records, and it might have been a truly challenging thing to do as the land of Finns is notorious for its heavy metal\rock obsession. Apparently it is also inhabited by Tesla Boy species lovers that tend to stick together when they scent a big indie happening with great music coming. That night a pretty legendary venue Klubi was packed with hipsters of all sorts and colours, and the Russian band rocked their world to the extent that overly shy Finnish youngsters started to jump onto the stage posing a threat to the equipment of Poko Cox and evoking rapture among other youngsters. There were lots of those who were singing along with Tesla Boy their Electric Lady, Thinking Of You, Spirit of The Night and also the covers, e.g. The Stooges “I Wanna Be Your Dog”. Others were first hovering near the stage, then getting more and more involved into the gig’s vibe they moved more dance-like with smiles beaming all over their shy faces. At the end of the gig everybody seemed to be happy, excited and in a great party mood commenting on the band like “Wow, this Tesla Boy is so cool, pity that Russian..."

But wait a minute, music has no nationality! And isn’t it better to listen to a band because it is an awesome band and not labeling it Russian and bringing over all the stereotypes? Why don’t you just enjoy Tesla Boy, go to their gigs and have fun? It’s as simple as that, isn’t it!
