The album Moon Landing is the solo effort of Sivert Høyem who was the former vocalist with Norway’s biggest ever rock band Madrugada (who are by the way well worth checking out if you have a spare hour or two to give them a proper listen). This album is the result of the untimely demise of the Norwegian band after the sudden death of the guitarist Robert . After the band split Sivert Høyem retreated to a cabin in the mountain accompanied by a host of musician pals and made an album. The recording process was not without its problems, there was the occasional health hazard, a couple of times the 16 track tape recorder they were using caught fire!

The tracks on the album are highly melodic and at times feel as though he is accompanied by a full orchestra. Track one ‘Belorado’ sets the scene at 8:47, it is an epic start to the record. For some reason while listening to the opener I am reminded of the colossal noise makers Fu*k*d Up, I’m not quite sure why! All 10 tracks have that epic timeless feel to them none of them are much under five minutes.

Stand out tracks include track four ‘What You Doin With Him?’ could have been written by Primal Scream, think get you rocks off and your not far off the sound of this track. A tambourine is effectively employed as accompaniment throughout the song. Other comparisons could be made to the one and only legend that is Mr Johnny Cash and the little known indie band Ten Benson. Track nine is another tambourine led rock song, it sounds like a cross between Oasis and Kraftwerk!

This solo album is a triumph, following the tragic circumstances which forced him to go solo, anyone could have forgiven Sivert Høyem if he had decided to quit music forever, but in the words of the man himself he “just could not quit. I have great, maybe even unrealistic expectations of my abilities”. Where I come from that is fighting talk, hopefully his next album will be just as musically accomplished, if it is we are in for a real treat.

If you are intrigued by this musician he is due to hit British shores at around the time of the release of this album in early April so go check him out if you want an interesting evening.
