Sick Puppies - Amos' Southend, Charlotte, NC - July 27th 2010
Support: My Darkest Days, It's Alive & Janus

The evening opened with My Darkest Days, a new rock band hailing from Toronto, Canada. On their first US tour, these five guys are working hard to make their mark on the international music scene and it shows. They threw everything they had on stage and brought the crowd with them on their ride. From the heartfelt 'Every Lie' to the cover of Duran Duran’s 'Come Undone' to the crowd favorite, 'Porn Star Dancing,' they thoroughly entertained the audience.

Next on stage were the young Florida band, It’s Alive. They brought powerful rock licks combined with a strong pop sensibility to their act. The lead singer Zack, although small in stature, showed the strength in his voice on every song. His hand fluttering on his mic was reminiscent of Christina Aguilera, but there was nothing diva about their performance. The set took a heavy turn with the song ‘Liar’ and really got the crowd going.

The visually cohesive band, Janus were next to tear up the stage. Their military styled uniforms fit well with their heavy but controlled sound. Their aesthetic details were managed even down to the strings on the bass guitar. Lead singer David got the crowd involved with his passionate singing and crowd involvement, sitting on the front of the stage and even jumping up onto the barricade for part of a song. Their distinctive sound, showcased on their first single ‘Eyesore,’ is sure to be heard more and more.

The crowd was stoked to see the main act, Sick Puppies. Shimon, Mark and Emma came out to a roaring audience. The energy was high from the start and stayed up through the entire set, with lead singer Shimon encouraging plenty of crowd participation. The emphasis was always on how important their fans are to them. They obviously enjoy their headlining position and took their time working through the many crowd favorites such as ‘Odd One,’ ‘War,’ and ‘What Are We Waiting For.’

They slowed it down for a lovely acoustic set in the middle. Shimon took that time to tell the story of how they got signed. It involved a little YouTube sensation known as ‘Free Hugs.’ Currently standing at well over 60 million views, the feel good video made the labels take notice and their song ‘All the Same’ propelled them to success.

Following the acoustic set, they flew into a short instrumental cover of some popular heavy rock songs from their favorite bands, including Green Day, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Rage Against the Machine. The rest of the show was a bombastic ride through some of their heavier sounds, ending with the extremely popular ‘You’re Going Down.’

As always, recognizing the importance of their fans, Sick Puppies stayed at their merchandise table long after their set was over to meet every single person in the crowd. No one left Amos’ Southend without a smile on their faces Monday night.
