It’s gotta be said that some people will do anything for a good show, even defy Mother Nature. Though the weather was beyond nuts; 40-50mph wind and severe rain, fans were out in force to see Panic at the Disco on their first UK tour with new material from their forth coming album ‘Pretty. Odd.’
Respect where respect is due, if you were able to make it here today then you are both crazy and lucky. Though the weather could get you down, you’d be hard pressed to find anyone that is less than hyped to be seeing Panic at the Disco tonight. After being away in the States working on their new record, the boys have returned to London town to present their work.
With a stripped down set, we have lost the flairs and dazzle of the ‘Fever’ era of Panic for a more down to earth and chilled out vibe. They’ve redrafted old material to work with the new sound of ‘Pretty. Odd’ and introduced us to an array of new songs from the current single ‘Nine in the Afternoon’ to my favourite of the new tracks ‘She’s a Handsome Woman’. The maturity in the voices, melodies and technique is clear from the offset and Brendon has found a comfortable groove in his vocals and proves how easy it can be to envy him as he plays piano, guitar and bass along with his vocals during the set. Ryan’s confidence has come on leaps and bounds as he banters with Jon and the crowds and Spencer keeps a quiet cool from his drum riser.
As all eyes fall to Panic to see if they can pull out another hit record, they prove that it wasn’t all smoke and mirrors of the circus dancers that created a buzz around their record. They could have quite easily done ‘A Fever you can’t sweat out’ vol. 2 but they’ve seemed to have gone with their gut instinct and produced a body of work that will hopefully last over time rather than just fade into a bargain bin. A wonderful interactive performance from the Las Vegas locals, whom would be back in London anytime, judging from fan reception at the Roundhouse.
