Hardcore is definitely one of the genres that has reached out to a growing number of music fans over the past decade or so and slowly but surely, more sub genres have emerged where bands are choosing to mix melodic hardcore and pop punk. It worked for Four Year Strong who are gaining top festival slots, and another band who are taking interesting approaches within the genre are Our Time Down Here. For this latest EP “Last Light” (their third release), they show a greater maturity than up to now and the songs showcase some alternative influences such as Alkaline Trio and Gaslight Anthem.

“Requiem” is a typical opening track for hardcore with pulsating riffs and raucous group vocals, and is a good taster of what's to come. “A Paper Ring” blasts off promisingly but at just over a minute leaves the listener wanting more. The highlight tracks come in the form of “The Midnight Hour” - where vocals are very much to the fore and lyrics seem to matter for the first time - and “Draper” which ups the pace with crushing drums and urgent vocals. Sturdy bass lines and poppy hooks can be found in “Tiny Teeth” which provides one of the catchiest tunes on the album, while “Cloud Of Dust” is punk rock fury pure and simple. (Have they been listening to Set Your Goals perhaps? ) The change of pace midway is arresting and offset by a catchy sing along chorus that fades away. The only downside is perhaps there could be more variation, but there's plenty of time to perfect their sound as they've already shown they have developed in this latest offering.

The band tend to tour quite regularly, so if they stop by a venue near you, they are definitely worth a visit. Support upcoming music!
