This is an EP which I have been listening to for a while and am completely fascinated by. Luke is an acoustic folk singer from Plymouth. You can be forgiven for missing his music amongst the vast map of interesting solo artists releasing music at the moment. Unlike the vast majority of theses singers The Lo-fi style Luke favours relies on music played through a battered acoustic guitar and recorded simply.

The Lo-fi musical approach is complimented by the complex vocals, which cover a large vocal range throughout the emotional seven track EP. Lyrically Luke appears wise beyond his years with each track of the adding another dimension to his emotional and political profile with a great deal of honesty. As the emotion builds up through Luke’s tender lyrics the vocals add a haunting characteristic as they hit ranges close to a falsetto.

Although the record favours a Lo-fi approach musically throughout, the instrumental introduction and closing track feature an almost harrowing dark sound from a distorted accordion. This small touch is enough to showcase a level of musicianship that is not always clear in solo work.

If I were to make comparisons of Luke’s music I would say he portrays the passion and emotion both lyrically and vocally of David Ford, Frank Turner and Matthew Reynolds with a similar level of musical variety. Vocally it would be unfair to compare Luke’s style to anyone as he has an individual voice and a huge vocal range.

It is hard to form a full opinion on an artist based upon a debut EP consisting of seven tracks but the level of potential shown in this EP fascinates me and I can’t wait to here more. I’m also very curious to see how the raw emotion of this EP comes across live as I’m sure performing with your heart on your sleeve to this degree must be exhausting.
