The Low Anthem - The Fox Theatre - April 3rd 2010
Support: Frontie Ruckus, Nathaniel Rateliff

The Low Anthem hit Boulder’s Fox Theatre with a feather’s touch, creating a glistening wall of sound from a variety of instruments that was intimate and enchanting. It called to mind the simple gorgeousness of classics like Van Morrison’s Astral Weeks, and the effect was just as hypnotic.

In a time when indie folk bands are becoming more and more numerous, more often than not taking their sound into realms of the psychedelic or mixing it with dance-style music, it’s a refreshing thing to see a group not only stick to folk roots, but immerse themselves in those roots, creating something but new and old.

After openers Frontier Ruckus and Nathaniel Rateliff, The Low Anthem took to the stage and performed a set drawn mainly from their debut, Oh My God, Charlie Darwin, a few songs from an upcoming album, and songs drawn from the rich history of Americana music.

The band, made up of Ben Knox Miller, Jeff Prystowsky, Jocie Adams and Mat Davidson are a group of extraordinarily multi-talented musicians, with a changing of instruments in between every song. Every member took a turn on all the instruments, and if that wasn’t impressive enough, their vocal interplay is even more stirring live than on their record.

The set opened with a lush version of “To the Ghosts Who Write History Books,” and with a few exceptions like the Kerouac-esque rocker, “Home I’ll Never Be,” they band stayed in the mellower vein, creating a sonic landscape that glistened like strands of gossamer woven together to create a beautiful tapestry of sound.

The highlight was the mostly vocal “Charlie Darwin,” made even lovelier on stage by the vocal interplay between the band members.

In a way, the show was an oddity, mostly because it was so quiet, and so emotional. It seduced the audience into a blissful calm that only the purest music can achieve. Leaving the show was almost like coming out of a daydream, an effect that lingered for a while.

The Low Anthem provides a concert experience that is the definition of the transformative power of live music. That is an anthem for any music lover.
