1. Long May You Reign
The track 'Long may you reign' by John Shelly and the Creatures contains a haunting, catchy melody and exquisite vocals. The lyrics hint at a tender love affair which you are drawn into but never really know all the details. The only negative comment I could make about the song is that at just shy of 2:40 it is way too short. However the shortness of the track will only lead people to want to hear more from this band, I know it has made me eager to check out more of their songs.
The musical style of the track is part shoe gazing classic indie, part folk and almost strays into blues territory recently made popular by artists such as festival favourite Seasick Steve.
Comparisons could be drawn between John Shelly and the Creatures and the Artist Conor Oberst in his incarnation of Bright Eyes. Also the melody is reminiscent of Captain Beefheart and his magic band. This single could prove the perfect backing track to unexpectadly balmy spring nights.
Watch out for John Shelly and the Creatures they deserve to be part of your sound track to summer 2009.
