With hints of grunge meets punk; a reworked British version Bouncing Souls perhaps, In The Black based in London take their sound from classic rock bands but present it in an informal style and that makes them feel fresh with vibrancy of passion. Very gritty and energetic the Iota EP release may be small in content but it shines a light into the black and gives a sense of true live performers rather than pre-recorded album tracks; evidence for this is the fact the live bonus track sounds on par to the 3 studio tracks. They have a fighting dog attitude that makes them rise against the grain and the themes coming off Iota hold try to those morals and band ethics.

Blindman is their anti establishment pro anarchy battle call and a good choice as there album opener as it leaves you with little doubt as what the band is about and what your gonna get for the rest of the record. It’s a perfect introduction for Iota as well as In The Black themselves. Don’t Call Me is more about being excluded where as Blindman is more about the want to be separated and then the glue between the two, If I Told You, is being more upbeat about the gap between this; how there is good in being outside the bubble and the lifestyle they follow with their ‘live for the now and for me’ persona.

Though they aren’t paving out new ground with their motto of punk rock thesis they are doing it in their own style and if nothing more this is what rock is about if you read the by line; it’s expressing yourself as yourself, and even if this may be the similar to those around you and many that have come before that’s not particularly a bad thing when done right. Catchy and inviting the Iota EP is more than worth a listen; it’s worth getting into. In the Black are soon to play shows in Camden, London and Iota is available to download now.
