The Gaslight Anthem - The Ogden Theatre, Denver - July 24th 2010
Support: Tim Barry & Chamberlain

The Gaslight Anthem walked onto the stage at Denver’s Ogden Theatre to Jay-Z’s hit single, ‘Empire State of Mind.’

Pretty gutsy for a band that has always prided itself on being from New Jersey. Still, the band’s focus seems to have shifted across the river to the big city, as reflected on their excellent third record, 'American Slang.'

Whichever location they’re celebrating, the band can still pull off a killer rock show, as they ably demonstrated, running through a set list that was like a live greatest hits, culling favorites from their first two albums – 'Skin or Swim,' and 'The ’59 Sound' – as well as their latest release.

Brian Fallon was in top form, his vocals searing through songs like ‘Great Expectations,’ and ‘We Came to Dance.’ Vocals aside, Fallon is one of the rare lead singers who can play the guitar, too, and the lead he took on cuts like ‘The Diamond Street Church Choir,’ showed that his chops are improving.

Lead guitarist Alex Rosamilla really wailed on the guitar all night, tearing it up on every single song. Bassist Alex Levine kept the beat, while Benny Horowitz blew the house down on the drums.

The best thing about The Gaslight Anthem is that they’re not just a bunch of individuals playing together, but rather their music requires them to play as a cohesive unit, and judging from the way they stomped through every number, it’s obvious they’ve become aces at group playing.

The energy they maintained throughout the entire show was enough to make most other bands look like weaklings. The crowd jumped and moshed through most of the set, though when the band slowed things down for their two slower numbers – ‘Blue Jeans & White T-Shirts,’ and the excellent ‘Here’s Looking at You, Kid’ – the effect was that much greater, since it was in such contrast to the rest of the set.

Like in the best shows, there was a give and take between the band and the audience, and that’s what really made the show a stand-out. After a six-song encore, the band left the stage sopping, sweating and smiling.

Everyone in the audience knew exactly how they felt.
