Emarosa - Newcastle o2 Academy 2 - May 24th 2010 Support: We Don't Dance To Love Songs, Deaf Havana
It's been a little over a year since Emarosa's last appearance in the UK, supporting the ever more popular You Me At Six on their 2009 March tour. The six piece, who bring a more creative outlook to the usual post-hardcore genre, were over promoting their upcoming album due to be released June 29th of this year and, much like a lot of their dates, Newcastle ended up a sell out once everyone had piled inside. All members of the crowd unbelievably excited for the night ahead.
We Don't Dance To Love Songs were up first, an indie/pop-punk four piece from Hull. There are still people filling up the room as they play and, despite some of the crowd not really knowing the band, there was still a great response. Especially when the band covered 5ive's 'Keep On Movin'", which had everyone singing along. You could tell that the band appreciated this and, as well as putting everything into their performance, they were keen to interact with those who'd taken the time to watch their set.
Deaf Havana were next, now only a four piece - since former lead vocalist/screamer Ryan unfortunately had to leave. With James taking over lead vocals there are a lack of screams but the crowd seemed to adapt to this pretty well, enjoying the amazing set. Much like the rest of the crowd, I certainly enjoyed the music and slight change. I can only see great things for this band, whether they find a new vocalist/screamer or not.
Emarosa finally came on stage at around 9:15, there were an extended time to set up despite, from what it seemed, the band wanting to get on stage and play. The crowd was expressing their excitement in shrill screams from the moment the lights went down and the band was introduced by the '21st Century Fox' theme. The band then flew into playing their first song and lead vocalist, Jonny Craig, belted out the lyrics with the majority of the crowd singing with him. Yet, there were some technical problems within the first song. Jonny's mic cut out a couple of times, which the singer wasn't happy about considering the back up mic wasn't co-operating either, despite this a lot of the crowd didn't seem to notice and pits continued as if nothing happened. Luckily everything was running smoothly again in not time. It wasn't long before things got crazy, with the rest of the band jumping around on stage, giving the most energetic performance possible, Jonny was jumping into the crowd. Occasionally he'd disappear, the crowd clinging to his shirt to keep him on their side of the barrier but he eventually found his way back to the stage. Of course there was a comedic moment, when guitarist Jonas Ladekjaer climbed onto the barrier and lost his balance, falling forward into the crowd. This earned a few laughs from the rest of the band and the fans that managed to catch it while it happened. The band played a few new songs, ones that were due to be released, as a teaser to their new album, later that week. Fans gave a positive response, obviously liking the new songs that Emarosa have worked hard on for months.
Things took a turn around three quaters into the set, when Jonny took another of his many jumps into the crowd and bashed his foot on the barricade then again on one of the monitors. This called for the set to be cut short as the vocalist just couldn't seem to play anymore from the pain. It was disappointing, not just for myself but for the rest of the crowd who were there mainly for Emarosa, but the majority understood why this had to happen. Still, the set ended on a high note with one of their most popular tracks; 'The Past Should Stay Dead'. This, of course, sent the crowd into a frenzy, not only because the song is popular but because it was also the last for the night, and everyone seemed to put every last ounce of energy they had into it. An amazing end to an equally amazing show, regardless of the few problems that arose.
