The Cave Singers - The Walnut Room - April 1st 2010
Support: Tom Collins & Houses

The Cave Singers are a band in the vein of throw-back folk rockers like Fleet Foxes that use finger-picking guitar and minimal percussion to create a kind of music that strips away production and leaves the listener open to the power of the human voice.

Playing to a packed room at The Walnut Room after openers Tom Collins and Houses, Pete Quirk, Derek Fudesco and Marty Lund played a set that, while disappointingly short, was a perfect embodiment of the new folk movement. It is no wonder they get name-checked by musicians like My Morning Jacket’s Jim James on a regular basis. It’s better to leave the audience wanting more than create overkill with too much music.

The band opened with the best track from last year’s Welcome Joy, “Leap,” driven by lilting guitar, Fleetwood Mac-esque vocals, and a simple drum beat the propels the song forward, building up momentum like the sweetest train anyone has ever heard.

Most of their songs stayed in this quieter tempo, which didn’t dampen the effect of the music in the slightest. By employing such simple music as a backdrop for their vocals, it allowed the audience to get the full effect of the words.

It’s better to leave the audience wanting more than create overkill with too much music, and this was a maxim the band seemed to embrace. After a stunning version of “Seeds of Night,” off their debut, they bid the audience a quiet adieu, and disappeared without an encore.

One would be inclined to complain about this, but when the music is that beautifully crafted, one takes what one can get. There were few complaints when the show was over, and that speaks for itself, and for the band.
