Go to Warped Tour or any similar rock or punk music festival and you’ll hear a lot of bands that sound like Burn the Fleet. The British quartet is part rock, part metal, and they write a lot of dramatic lyrics about falling apart. But don’t write the band off just yet. Their self-titled EP may sound a bit generic in parts, but some real potential shines through as well. (Note: The EP was originally titled The Mistress and featured only four songs, but this version of the album was re-released by Walnut Tree Records after they signed the band).

Lead singer Andrew Convey‘s powerful voice emerges and frequently stands out through the five track EP. For the most part, he lets the melodies do the work instead of falling back on the overused screams that typically plague this genre. The guitar work, done by Jack Spurway and James Swabey, is impressive right from the opening track, 'Conduits.' For the most part, the two following songs sound quite similar. That’s not to say that the songs are no good, but rather that there is a lack of originality.

But Burn the Fleet save the best for last on this record: 'Confessions of a Justified Sinner' and the closer 'Handfuls of Sand,' are the best and most distinct, for that matter. 'Handfuls' consists mainly of repetitive gang vocals and pounding drums, played with enthusiasm by Ross Barbour. Plus in the first few seconds, Convey really gets to show off his voice in a unique way compared to the rest of the album. The song proves that Burn The Fleet has the talent and ability to craft more musically diverse songs.

Burn The Fleet is headed in the right direction with this EP. This is music to rock out to and enjoy in a live setting. It’s not exactly groundbreaking (far from it), but it will get that mosh pit started in no time.
