Band Of Horses - The Fox Theater - 15th March 2010
The Fox Theater in Boulder was packed as South Carolina’s Band or Horses hit the stage, completely looking the part of a southern-rock indie band; plaid shirts, beards, long hair. There was nothing formulaic about their show, however, which was a quintessential display of what sets the band apart from its peers.
Playing in front of a backdrop that featured picturesque nature scenes (with the occasional deer walking through), the band ripped through a set that featured most of their first two albums – Everything All the Time and Cease to Begin – and played a few selections from their upcoming release, Infinite Arms.
Lead singer Ben Bridwell was in immaculate form, his aching voice rising and swelling over the music. The band stormed their way through heavy-hitters like “Great Salt Lake,” “Wicked Gill,” and “Is There A Ghost.” The band played brilliantly as a cohesive unit; create a swirling interplay of vocals, guitars and piano.
Just as comfortable with ballads as they are with the rockers, they played gorgeous renditions of “No One’s Gonna Love You,” and “Marry Song.”
This is one of the things that make Band of Horses stand out: their ability to write and play with such sincerity, no matter what type of songs they’re working on. They are finally starting to get some notice for this; they will be opening for Pearl Jam for some of their summer dates, and their third album is much anticipated by critics and fans alike.
The show closed with a jamming cover of a Yo La Tengo song, and the promise that they’d see Colorado again soon. After a show like that, fans will certainly be eagerly awaiting their return.
