With the end of most things, they tend to go out with a bang and with the end of one of their biggest tours to date My Chemical Romance send of The Black Parade in style with this double disc set showcasing both side of their stage persona’s; the stadium rock performers and the grimy basement band. The set available as a regular edition and a special edition pack featuring a numbered ‘death certificate’, a death mask designed by one of the five band members all neatly packed in a wooden crate box/coffin is a wonderful treat though not exactly easy on the pocket. Of the two shows the New Jersey how harks back to the original vibe of the band when they could play small venues and the heat in the room was made up of intensity as well as body mass. The Mexico stadium captures the epic stage show of ‘The Black Parade tour’ that hit the shores of most of the world and moved them into the category of stadium rock band and proving their success can be channelled into any size stage.
The CD part of the set is made up of the live audio of the Mexico City show and though it is a wonderful CD it is a shame that it only features songs from the one disc as both shows are worthy of being featured on the CD track listing. The set as a whole is a fine example as to why MCR fans are so dedicated to the band and how they inspire audiences to come back again and again as they provide more than your money’s worth of entertainment and are very much a LIVE band rather than only sounding half decent compared to the CD. They were built out of live shows and it is only natural that they continue to astonish with each gig they play.
One feature that would have been well loved would have been elements similar to their previous CD/DVD set ‘Life on the Murder Scene’ that had extras such as music videos from the album, live performances as well as behind the scenes footage. Perhaps seeing some of the magic that goes into the Black Parade tour; setting up, practicing, backstage and other elements would have been a cherry on the cake, but never the less it still is well worth having. My Chemical Romance are a band of their generation and with the death of the Black Parade who knows what might come next so enjoy this during the wait with a little hint of the future with an untitled track performed at the New Jersey gig and the best of their back catalogue live.
