Forming over 2 and a half years ago, Lakes have what they like to call a 'revolving door policy' when it comes to the members of their band. The band started out a live side project for members Jamie and Ross' photobook and only have a small handful of live shows under their belts.
The songs on this EP are more like instrumentals, they have very little vocals in them, some even have no vocals at all but when they do appear they are rough and edgy.
Track 1 'Our Town,' is an energetic and lively track but it doesn't sound like there are enough layers on this, it doesn't sound as pounding as it potentially could be.
'Aborder' begins with a soft springing sound, guitars join in the fun and begin to build up, only to let you down when the same tones carry on for over 3 minutes. This track desperately needs some vocals in it, without them the track is dull and quite annoying.
Track 4 'Bring Back Bobby Fischer' gets straight in there, full of head banging riffs and vocals that will make your ears bleed. The track slows down mid way but I half expected the tempo to kick back in, unfortunately I was disappointed by the slow ending.
Lakes are not afraid to experiment with their music, adding in the odd synth sound or effect here and there has worked well for them. I don't think the instrumental tracks work very well on this EP, it makes it seem as messy as their revolving line up.
