Having booked them for a charity gig in Manchester in February, I felt obliged to buy the Glaswegian six-man screamo outfit Flood Of Red’s debut EP after the gig. Entitled “Lost In The Light”, the four-track CD is engaging listening. I don’t usually enjoy “screamo” or similar music, as I find it, generally, contrived and generic. Surprisingly, this EP is top of my most played lists and has been for some time. Opener “Don’t Sleep, Swim” is essentially the title track, the main single. Not even three minutes long, it punches its way into your head and introverted frontman Jordan Spiers belts out his lyrics with energy and anguish. “Our House Is A Fish Tank” continues on a similar theme.

“Look at my hands, I can’t stop them shaking!”

Third track “Making Life Easier Since 1987” opens with a infectious guitar line, followed by more raw screams from Spiers. The song slows and fades in the middle to a chant of “These are the kids we grew up with, these are the kids that are killing each other” before launching into a series of multiple vocal lines and strong guitar hooks before drawing to a close.

“We will always keep dreaming”

Closing track “Oh Yes, There Will Be Blood” closes the EP with a an air of The Used, and comparisons to Alexisonfire and Funeral For A Friend can all be seen in this EP, and with any luck, Flood Of Red could move into the mainstream in the same way as Funeral For A Friend or LostProphets. They certainly have the ability.

“To except what is to become is to know you have to say goodbye”
